Sooty Tern in flight on Hamer Street Wharf, Auckland 21/11/25

Beobachtungsdetails

Appeared slightly larger than a white-fronted tern with grey black upper parts, black crown and nape and a black line from eye to bill. Near flocks of white-fronted terns and silver gulls, both of which occasionally harassed it. The sooty tern pecked at a small patch of low vegetation on the wharf and settled into it for a few minutes before wandering off and resting again nearby. I watched it for about half an hour after the count and noticed that it favoured resting on the few small patches of vegetation present on the wharf. It flew a few metres once, possibly to escape harassment and called at least once, a quiet rasping call.
