Individual 1
Beobachtungsdetails
For Rahul Pereira's photos "A bunch of sterna terns with some features of White-cheeked tern have been reported since 27th July 2024 from Mumbai. I had reported likely WCTs from Morya Mandir, Colaba (https://ebird.org/checklist/S189126942). The individuals photographed have the diagnostic grey rump and tail concolorous with mantle but lack a clear view of the diagnostic underwing pattern. Since there are no ebird records for Maharashtra, proper scrutiny and confirmation of all diagnostic pointers was needed. Two individuals (close up photos are of the different individual) were photographed on the ferry boat ride to Elephanta island seemed to be potential candidates for WCT on field. After careful observation of the photos, it was determined that their long thin bill, grey rump and tail and underwing pattern of grey lesser coverts, dark trailing edge with white band in middle fits well in both cases with WCT. ID confirmation was done by Ashwin V and Abhinandan C for both individuals. Prasad Ganpule was in agreement for the individual with close up views. Separation of WCT from Common tern can be very difficult considering how similar they are and the lack of good enough photographs from different angles especially in monsoon. Literature used for pointers - https://www.researchgate.net/figure/Summary-of-features-of-White-cheeked-Tern-and-Common-Tern-in-breeding-and-non-breeding_tbl1_364340896 Big thanks to our Mumbai Birding community for finding rarities in the rains, sharing reports and motivating everyone to step out."
