Beobachtungsdetails
A relatively smaller raptor circling up to the west at 10:30 with one of the local Red-tailed Hawks - looking at it through my binoculars showed it to be a Red-shouldered Hawk! Relatively smaller Buteo with telltale light ‘crescents’ in its primary feathers, a highly contrasting striped tail, contrasting striped flight feathers, red underwing coverts, a dark head and neck, and some dark sparse thick barring across its flanks and underparts - seemingly a young bird or sub-adult. Photos (including good comparison ones of it with the local Red-tailed). A very surprising bird to see in May with only 2 previous eBird records in Washington far away from the Columbia River Basin for all of April through June (Snohomish County birds in 1992 and 2001). Very interestingly as well, a Red-shouldered Hawk was photographed in Skagit County *the day after today’s observance* plus the following day with zero previous King County or Skagit County records for all of April through June, at least on eBird.
