I used noise reduction in Audacity to decrease the sound of me walking. Three of the woodpecker's calls are in the recording, beginning at about 0.4, 2.6, and 6.0 seconds.
Beobachtungsdetails
From near the intersection of Delmar Way and Vail St, I saw a woodpecker fly by, mostly just a silhouette, but I thought I caught a glimpse of a pale head on the otherwise dark bird. It clearly was not a Downy Woodpecker (bill too long) or a Northern Flicker (far too small) and both the head and the bill looked possibly too big (relative to the body) for a sapsucker. I saw where I thought the bird had landed in some trees to the south across Mayberry, so I quickly walked over there and, as I approached the trees, on Charles Place, I could hear the distinctive "pee-tik" call of the woodpecker, repeated about ten times, heard well enough for the ID. It flew off roughly to the southwest. I never did see it well. I saw a White-headed Woodpecker earlier in the week in our yard on Delmar Way, and I assume this was the same bird (although there have been at least three other WHWO reports in Reno in the past two months, so who knows). A nice bird for the end of the CBC!
