NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut # 2. Bulk reel: 63 7:50 AM to 8:30 AM. Weather: Fair, windy. "One-figure succession song" given in response to playback; the owl is being mobbed by numerous birds; it then gives a different, sharper type of call that is is probably a "bother call" due to "annoyance." Quality: 3. Level: 0. 203 tape. Copy from original at 7.5 ips and filt. 400/6 kHz. Owl then gives the "alternate song." (There are a number of these, all "decapitated" as they come after playback.) In the last part the owl several times begins the one-figure succession portion of the "alternate song" at only ~ one-half normal cadence. Bird was first heard giving "one-figure succession" song far away. I played the field tape prepared from Cut 1) and bird was shortly heard "singing" on hill above me. I tried more playback and owl reacted vocally very actively. However, by the time I could get set up to record, a number of birds had started to mob the owl which intimidated it and its vocal reaction was thereafter less active. Sound stimulation was (other): playback.
