Beobachtungsdetails
I originally thought it was possible that this could be a hybrid, but in hindsight I assume it is just a chunky looking Anna's. Unusual hummingbird coming to yard feeders. Looks very much like a Costa's, especially structurally with "hunched back" and "dumpy" look, and with isolated gray auriculars, but has Anna's features as well, such as a straight bill (actually malformed, bulging in center). Although the bird looks like a Costa's, the wings do not reach the end of the tail when perched, though they should extend slightly past the tail. The throat is speckled, somewhere between the white throat of a female Costa's and the central spot of an Anna's. When we have heard this bird vocalize, it is making the sounds of an Anna's. We have not heard it make any of the higher-pitched sounds of a Costa's. I've attempted to isolate the secondary coverts in a few cropped photos, but they are not shown well (low resolution photos). On a hybrid I gather that they would be somewhere between the angular stubs of feathers on an Anna's, and the longer and more rounded secondary coverts of a Costa's. They seem to match that description of being somewhere in-between on this bird, but I'm not certain.
