Beobachtungsdetails
A pair heard and recorded dueting approximately a mile up the northern side of the Pine Tree Trail in Oak-Juniper habitat at the bottom edge of where a few Pondarosas begin to intersperse themselves. Several very large oaks in the vicinity may have been potential nest sites. I did not get a visual (I was trying to lure one or both in closer with playback of themselves for a photo when the unidentified feline vocalized, at which point both birds fell dead silent). I do have several recordings. One seemed to be getting closer. I heard a third (and possibly a fourth) bird on my rapid trip back to the car (no recording of these birds, just the pair). There are certainly more pairs in this area, and perhaps there are a few in the canyons on the west side of the Organs. For whatever reason (perhaps predation pressure by feral cats and a lack of natural cavities) there is a paucity of reports of this species in the Las Cruces area along the river valley or in the El Paso area (aside from at nest boxes).
