Beobachtungsdetails
While tracking the Chestnut-sided Warbler along Shipley I heard very peculiar calls coming from the shrubs along the fence. For about 20-30 minutes around 8:00am I heard a bird low in the shrubs giving periodic burry "queeeer" or "queeerz" calls. The calls were spaced apart by several seconds and the series would run for up to 20 or 30 seconds though there were sometimes just single calls. As I was not familiar with the calls I listened and watched intently for the source. The bird seemed to sometimes be just inside the fence by gate 4, other times farther back behind the 1 pine on the south side of the gate but never came out the the vegetation. There were numerous (5-10) hermit thrushes present, including one or two gray backed individuals, but no thrush I saw looked any different than a Hermit. The calls were thrush like in quality yet not the double "chuk" or raspy "hreeep" or high "hip" calls typical of Hermit. To me they suggested and qualitatively like the queer call of a Grey-cheeked Thrush. Curtis, Matt, and friend came by later. They twice heard this bird softy make its odd "queeer" calls. The afternoon calls I heard, including those heard by Curtis et al were much quieter than what I heard in the AM. We were all intrigued by the sound and thought it worth further investigation. A weird Hermit call can't be ruled out but the sound does suggest something like a Veery or Grey-cheeked Thrush could lurking in the shrubs. I did obtain some so-so recordings of the calls. Not sure they shed more light on the matter but perhaps the sonograms will provide more insight.
