My target bird. Thanks to a fellow birder for pointing out the general area. After parking and entering, go straight all the way east on the trail until you get to the end. He was in the cattails on the left just about fifty feet before the T intersection. This is where the other birder had seen him a couple days ago, except he was on the north side of the cattails. The tree line is thick along the path, so I had to move through the trees to the water's edge to get a view. Be careful though as there are alligators here! If you want to see him I would recommend checking both the north border and the south border of the cattails. First you'll see Sora popping out and foraging in front of the cattails. Then the Virginia Rail will join him later. So if you see Sora, sit. Wait. Snap photo. Was surprised by the small size, as the Sora near him seemed slightly larger even. But more surprising was the incredible acceleration of the bird! Literally a flash, and I would wager based on what I saw that this birds ranks among the top five fastest runners in the avian world.
