Updated: Originally thought this was a hybrid, but consensus is that pollen accounts for the yellow belly observed on this particular bird. Spotted what appears to be a rare hybrid: Chestnut-backed chickadee x Yellow-bellied tit (hybrid). Distinguishing features of a Chestnut backed, but with a very bright yellow belly! (*on par with the yellow coloring of an immature/non-breeding male American Goldfinch …or the yellow on a Cedar Waxwing for perspective comparison of the yellow hue/tone observed). The yellow coloring was so unusual, vibrant and notable that I’ve spent the past week researching both my photos and ornithology sources and believe that this is at the least a Chestnut-backed chickadee hybrid of some sort….with my inclination that it’s a hybrid related to the Yellow-bellied tit. I was able to spend an exclusive 15 or so minutes observing this bird and will include a handful of photos to accompany this species account. Photos are the best I could capture in the moment with my iPhone, etc.
