Lifer! Phenomenal bird to come back to the United States for. Found two days ago by Ryan Zucker, who suspected a Slaty-backed but was talked down from such craziness and eventually went with the incorrect Lesser Black-backed ID. Everyone makes mistakes! Correctly identified the next day by Anthony Collerton and Andrew Baksh from Evan Schumann’s high-quality photos on eBird, refound this morning by Shane Blodgett. First record for New York City. Chunky gull similar in size to nearby Herring Gulls. Short wings. Wings very dark, but much lighter than on the nearby Great Black-backed. Streaky neck and a smudge around the eye. In flight and with wings open, a very thick trailing white edge to the wing. Pink legs seen in good light. A happy occasion with many friends at the Reservoir. Hands down one of the best birding experiences I’ve had in the city. Photos.
