Blackburnian Warbler, Creekside Park (Dana Point CA) Sept. 30, 2021
Beobachtungsdetails
As I was leaving the park a bird popped up in a distant oak facing forward, a warbler showing a bright yellow throat and white below with side streaking, then flew almost immediately into the park. My initial thoughts were Yellow-throated Warbler. I poked around and found the bird in a sycamore by the fenced in basketball court at 9:50a and realized it was a Blackburnian, then lost it again. Frantically looking at other sycamores with no luck, I returned to the original sycamore at 10:20a and it was present. Lost it, 10:44a again same sycamore, then flew across dog park to a nearby Tipu tree. The bird returned to the sycamore around 11:20a for good photo oportunity. Other birders arrived almost immediately after last view, and not seen again when I departed at 12:50p. Dark back neck and crown with tell-tale light braces/stripes on back, Forecrown with light median stripe. Face yellowish with brownish auriculars, bordered on top with a blackish eyeline, and forming a triangle/angular shape . Auriculars continue into side stripes. Yellow supercilium, brightest yellow on throat to top of chest then fading into white towards tail. Wings dark, almost black with two bold white wingbars. Fairly bold black stripes on side. Pinkish bill with dark tip. Vent and untertail entirely white, with dark edges at the corners of the tip of the tail. Pointed tips to tail feathers. Dark legs with slightly lighter reddish feet. My impression of the age of the bird based on all features is a HY male. Photos
