Whilst watching the phalaropes, I picked up this bird foraging with the Dunlin the back of my field of view. Bird was distant at around 250m range but obviously a small calidrid. A very bright bird with rufous on the crown, ear coverts and mantle, I initially put it down as a bright Semipalmated Sandpiper; in retrospect, I didn't rule out Little Stint at this point either. After pointing out the Wilson's Phalaropes to a few people and Nicole arrived and had a nice look at them too, I went to re-find the calidrid for her. Scanning along the muddy edges I picked up a couple of breeding plumage Buff-bellied Pipits which was a nice bonus and the calidrid foraging next to them. Now at only 35m range, it was certainly not a bright Semipalmated Sandpiper and clearly a pristine breeding plumage Western Sandpiper! Bird had a pale face and bright rufous cap, white belly, dense black tear drops along the sides of the breast, crisp scapulars with rich rufous centers. Black legs and bill, which was longer and more decurved than a typical Semipalmated, reminiscent of schinzii Dunlin. After 10-15 mins the bird flew with the Dunlin and landed again at 250m and later at 300m away where it remained until we left. Fortunately, a few birders managed to connect before it went dark.
