Presumed SNEG, Great Meadows NWR Concord, MA 7-28-16.
Beobachtungsdetails
*Scarce inland. Small egret sitting on mud bar and wading , dark bill with yellow lores. Yellow-green legs. We looked for some time at the feet which only appeared to show a little yellow. By no means a slam-dunk ID, as this bird appeared--given distance and backlighting--to have many field marks of a LBHE, including the appearance of pink around the eyes at certain angles, gray at the base of the bill, and uniform dark olive legs. Additionally, this bird seemed to be foraging with the more horizontal posture of an LBHE, although a few shots show it with the tightly coiled neck more typical of SNEG. On balance, despite poor quality of photos, bill shows a darker upper mandible, with paler lower matching lores. Poor evidence of all yellow feet, but this feature is highly variable in young, especially dirty birds. No hint of gray or black on outer primaries. Compared to LBHE at Hobbs Brook Basin a few days ago, the ID challenge is evident, but this bird seems to tip toward SNEG. Hobbs Brook LBHE: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist/S30781153
