Poor audio of two short song bouts from the target bird, with House Finch added in for bonus confusion.
Beobachtungsdetails
Accepted by ABC as "Eastern" purpureus subspecies. Bird caught our attention based on melodious song that was richer and more varied than House Finch. Flight call was a sharp high "pik!" note which was very distinctive - subsequent comparison to both "eastern" and "california" call note recordings were more similar to "eastern". Views of the bird showed breast streaking that was crisp and short against a bright white ground color. Undertail coverts were pure white with no streaking. Appearance of white- to buff-tipped greater coverts, which create appearance of wingbars more consistent with "eastern" than "california" Purple Finch. Bird was not a House Finch Face based on bold face pattern, sparse crisp breast streaking, notched tail and bill shape - also call note and song (see audio). Compared to Cassin's Finch, this bird lacked an eyering and undertail streaking, and the call and song were not consistent with CAFI.
