Behavior and other notes: Adult male and female Pileated Woodpeckers interacting at a suet feeder. The female appeared to be the individual that was making the soft, low-pitched calls as she tried to edge her way into the suet feeder to eat (loudest around 1:10). They appeared to be a mated pair as there was no overt aggression between them. The male eventually allowed the female to approach the suet feeder and eat. During the second portion of the recording, the male returned to the tree and the pair started fencing with their bills. The sharp, loud clicks are their bills hitting as they fenced. At times, they would grab the other's bill with their bill for a fraction of a second. It all appeared playful and not as if they were fighting. Recording Time: 1252 (UTC -4). Temperature 7C. Habitat: mixed deciduous woods. Distance to sound source: 4 meters. Specific location: Wood Song Berkeley Co., WV. Latitude 39.575464, Longitude -78.056623. Elevation 156 meters. ID’d by sight and sound; ID confidence 100%. Equipment notes: Recorder HPF on at 80Hz, -12dB/octave.
