Beobachtungsdetails
Bird was first spotted at about 1715 hrs on the water about half way between Bennett's Pier Road and Sandy Point (outlet of Brockonbridge Gut). It was first spotted about 3 - 5 m offshore then began moving out to about 50m offshore. It then returned ~ 10 m offshore and then floated slowly southward.. My first impression was a Razorbill; however, I soon noticed the bill did not look large and thick enough for Razorbill. Soon thereafter, I noticed the black band extending across the neck eliminating a clean white throat of Razorbill. As it came closer, I noticed all black head. When it approached my position on the beach it moved farther out offshore but soon returned after floating past my position. This shows the bird was alerted to my presence. I had thought it might be ill because it was so close to shore but it was clearly alert enough to maneuver around me. It returned and came to within 5 m of shoreline before drifting a bit farther out again. When I left at ~ 1740 it was slightly south of Bennett's Pier Road continuing to drift south. Bird may have been associating with gulls and loons at the outflow of the gut as much activity was taking place in that area when I arrived. Pictures TBA.
