A pair of Spinifex Pigeons sunning and preening. Spinifex Pigeons (Geophaps plumifera) are one of four endemic Australian pigeons in the genus Geophaps. They are found in rocky arid or semi-arid areas close to water that are often dominated by spinifex – hummock-forming grasses of the genera Triodia and Plectrachne. There are three named races of the Spinifex Pigeon – these birds belong to the north-western Australian race ferruginea. Spinifex Pigeons can be tame around campgrounds – this pair was busily feeding and running amongst the caravans and vehicles in the early morning at the Gascoyne Junction Tavern & Tourist Park in Western Australia. After a bout of feeding, they perched to sun and preen on a concrete kerb. Elevation: 148 m. Date added to IBC: August 23, 2019.
