A male Emu standing and preening in a saltmarsh on Meeberrie Station. The flightless Emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae) is Australia’s tallest bird, up to 1.9 metres (6.2 feet) in height. They are widespread in Australia, and occur in a wide range of natural and disturbed habitats, although they seem to be most common in the arid and semi-arid areas. Emus travel long distances in search of food and water, and can sprint at speeds of up to 50 km/h (31 mph). Emus are curious birds – this male was resting in saltmarsh on the floodplain of the Murchison River on Meeberrie Station. It stood up when we arrived, and began preening, apparently unconcerned as Sally photographed and videoed it from our vehicle. Elevation: 328 m. Date added to IBC: July 2, 2019.
