A curious male Emu in saltmarsh walking towards our vehicle. The flightless Emu (Dromaius novaehollandiae) is Australia’s tallest bird, up to 1.9 metres (6.2 feet) in height. They are widespread in Australia, and occur in a wide range of natural and disturbed habitats, although they seem to be most common in the arid and semi-arid areas. Emus travel long distances in search of food and water, and can sprint at speeds of up to 50 km/h (31 mph). This male Emu was curious and approached our vehicle as I waved my hand above the roofline of our vehicle while Sally photographed and videoed it. Its ridiculous vestigial wings are obvious, hanging just below the base of its neck. Elevation: 324 m. Date added to IBC: July 2, 2019.
