As I was standing in the preserve area photographing a mockingbird, I heard a faint rendition of what sounded like the first part of a White-crowned Sparrow song. Knowing this would be unusual, I listened carefully and heard it again. I slowly walked in the direction I thought the song was coming from, while recording audio at the same time. As I got closer, it delivered the full song (though it still sounded faint), confirming a White-crowned Sparrow. I found the bird a short distance away perched on a Southern California Black Walnut, where it kindly posed for several photos before flying off toward the base of Little Badger Hill. This is one of the latest records of a spring migrant White-crowned Sparrow in San Bernardino County, and perhaps the latest for Z. l. gambelii.
