Beobachtungsdetails
The bird was at Mud Bay with a flock of 35 Green-winged Teal at high tide. As the tide went out it flew a short distance to the backside of the gravel spit in Mud Bay. Initially, I was shocked by the face pattern as I scanned the teal flock. It was reminiscent of a Baikal Teal, but not quite right. The features of the face were a bit blurred and not as crisp as those of a Baikal. The pattern wasn't right either. This bird is clearly a hybrid duck. The white vertical bar on the side of the breast is a mark of Baikal or Green-winged Teal. The overall size, shape and build suggest Northern Pintail, as does the back half of the bird. The bill was also long and pretty thin and appeared blueish gray, similar to a Northern Pintail's, although slightly darker and without the refined black edging. In flight, the bright green speculum had a cinnamon leading edge and a white trailing edge. I initially thought that this bird was a candidate for Baikal Teal X Northern Pintail. However, after input from others and reviewing photos of known hybrids of NOPI x GWTE and NOPI x BATE, I think this bird is a NOPI x GWTE. aaron@wildernessbirding.com
