Beobachtungsdetails
Re-found Stephan Lorenz's Aechmophorous grebe while out on Jeff's boat. Nina Rach and I were busy taking pictures and film and spent limited time studying the grebe with binoculars, but what we saw seemed to confirm the black around the eye like Stephan's pictures; however, the bill did look rather bright orangish yellow. On way back to shore we studied some of Nina's great pictures that were taken from closer range than Stephan's, (according to our captain Jeff) - they seem to clearly show the white lores and no gray under the eye that confirms Clark's Grebe. Cin-Ty Lee saw the pictures when we got to shore and he thought it was classic Clark's; Cin-Ty also thought Clark's from the bill color seen in his scope at great distance. Stephan's more distant picture that shows a black lore with seemingly some dark under the eye is probably an aberation/camera effect. We felt certain there was only one bird there in the same location Stephan and John Berner saw it. The bird could travel quite far underwater before popping up, but we never saw two birds on the surface at once.
