Beobachtungsdetails
Continuing bird found by David Rankin on Dec 14, and first spotted by Julie Szabo in the far corner of the northeastern arm of the lake this morning. We watched it for a little over five minutes before it took flight toward the dam. Noticeably smaller than a Common Loon, with a more slender head and neck and daintier bill. Crown and hindneck pale to medium gray blending into white face and throat, with the gray of the crown extending down to but not below the eye, and no strong demarcation between the gray and the white on the sides of the neck as in Pacific Loon. Upper parts darker, almost blackish, with crisp white tips to the feathers of the back, scapulars, and upper wing coverts. The culmen was nearly straight, while the lower mandible was straight along the basal 3/4, but angling up toward the tip for the distal 1/4, and the bill in general was held slightly upturned as is typical for this species.
