Apparent HY male black-headed grosbeak
Beobachtungsdetails
Apparent HY male (some replacement molt in secondaries and greater coverts). Feeding briefly on sunflower seeds with house finches, only present for a few minutes. Throat and chest very rich tawny, belly and flanks paler tawny, with only a few, faint streaks present on lower flanks, and no sign of rose tints anywhere on the chest. I was unable to view the underwing coverts, but comparisons with specimens (e.g. Remsen, http://losbird.org/jvr_rbgb.html) suggest flank streaking averages much heavier and more extensive on fall HY male rose-breasted grosbeaks. Supercilium was distinctly buffy, not white or whitish as in RBGR (per Pyle 1997). I realize hybrids occur and it may not be possible to eliminate hybridization as a possibility in this bird. Not resighted after initial, brief visit.
