In adult breeding plumage
Beobachtungsdetails
I found it in a mixed flock of gulls and terns. It stood out as being the only tern still in breeding plumage. It had a full black cap, a red bill with a black tip, and stubby red legs. It was obviously smaller than the Sandwich Terns. Diagnostic field marks that indicate this was a Common Tern, rather than a Forster's, include that the color of its legs and beak was dark, as opposed to orange; jet-black wing tips extended past its tail; wings were generally dark gray, as opposed to white; and this would be late in the season, according to Sibley's Guide, for a Forster's Tern to still be in breeding plumage.
