NOTES: Mukushi ranger Bradford Allicock and I set out from Muri Scrub Camp with the possibility of recording Neomorphus rufipennis in mind. We encountered a mixed species understory flock at an antswarm. We'd discussed earlier that if an understory mixed species flock was encountered, the pre-recorded Neomorphus rufipennis recording by Paul A. Schwartz should be played back. Manning the playback recorder, Bradford immediately played back the tape, the first sounds being bill snaps. Though we'd not observed any Neomorphus at the swarm, two birds were immediately upon us, one bill snapping. The birds then retreated. While I positioned the MS pair, Bradford played back the Schwartz recording. One of the birds then approached again, this time hooting. The bird made a large circle around us, calling softly as it did so, moving left to right. This movement is discernable due to the stereo field. As the bird circled us, it attempted to remain conceal from us by walking behind fallen logs (only the top of the birds back was visible) and vegetation. Habitat: Rainforest, Evergreen Forest, Swamp.
