at dusk Eugenio began playback of this species, which surprised us - I at least had not heard him mention this bird as a possibility. somewhat to my surprise, the playback produced a response; but rather than stumbling around in the dark trying to spot the bird from the trail, I suggested that we were close enough to the road to try to see it from there. at first, it seemed that my plan might have been a failed experiment. we had two (!) birds responding vocally, and occasionally we'd see a bird, briefly, in flight, but they always seemed to settle just below the road. the birds then moved to a new spot a short distance back up the road. Antonio rushed to the site and was able to spotlight one of the birds very much in the open, perched lengthwise on a solitary bare branch a few meters above the ground, extending over a roadcut. the bird tolerated our presence for several minutes - quite a treat to get such prolonged views of this poorly known species.
