Podrobnosti k pozorování
Large flock of Eastern Meadowlarks observed foraging in extensive agricultural grassland/pasture complex. High count reflects winter flocking behavior in optimal habitat. Counting methodology: Initially estimated 30-35 birds on ground in active feeding flock spread across approximately 2-3 acres of short-grass pasture. Conducted systematic count by scanning left to right in sections with binoculars, then recounted to verify. As birds flushed in waves when vehicle/cattle passed through area, was able to recount in flight - minimum 40 birds, possibly 45+. Reported as 40 to be conservative. Behavior: Large feeding aggregation typical of winter meadowlark flocks. Birds actively foraging in loose association across grazed pasture, walking with characteristic stop-start gait. When disturbed, flushed in groups of 8-12 birds showing white outer tail feathers in flight. Several birds perched on fence line giving territorial "spring-of-the-year" songs despite season. Flocks of this size common in this specific location during fall/winter months. Habitat context: Extensive cattle pasture (50+ acres) with ideal short-grass conditions maintained by active grazing. Habitat includes scattered fence posts for perching, mixture of bare ground and short vegetation, adjacent to fallow agricultural fields. This pasture complex consistently holds large meadowlark numbers during non-breeding season as birds concentrate in high-quality foraging areas. Supporting details: Heard constant "dzert" flight calls as birds moved. Plumage ranged from bright yellow-breasted males to duller individuals, consistent with mixed-sex winter flock. No behavioral indication of breeding activity - purely foraging aggregation. Zero confusion with Western Meadowlark (wrong range, familiar with vocalizations, confirmed Eastern ID on multiple individuals). Context for high count: Eastern Meadowlarks form substantial winter flocks in Florida, especially in optimal grassland habitat. This location is known locally for consistently high meadowlark numbers during fall/winter. Count of 40+ is high but not unprecedented for this site and habitat type during this season. Duration: 15+ minutes of observation allowing thorough counting and verification. High confidence in minimum count of 40 birds.
