Eureka! Finally connected; many thanks to Richard from Manhattan (though I don’t think this is the same Richard who used to call into the Michael Kay Show). I met Richard at Beaver Lake, where we were both on a “wild goose chase” (nod to Steel Pulse—look them up if you haven’t already; a great reggae band). After exchanging numbers, Richard and I regrouped near the golf course and began scanning from the roadside. With no geese in sight, we were getting a bit despondent. I started to wonder if I’d be better off chasing the Cassin’s Sparrow that was being reported elsewhere. Richard, however, decided to keep searching while I mulled over my options. About five minutes after we split up, my phone rang. Richard was on the line and had eyes on the goose! Credit also goes to David or was it Matt? a helpful birder with Massachusetts plates. The bird was easy to pick out: silvery tertials and back stood out among the Canada Geese, along with that telltale orange central mark on the bill and the broader grin patch. The goose seemed quite content hanging out with the Canada Geese and two Snow Geese. A fantastic state tick for me with big thanks to Richard and the Massachusetts dude. Digiscoped images shot through a chain link fence to be added.
