Podrobnosti k pozorování
***mega; amazing state first rarity casually strolling the residential neighborhood, proving in lawns, cutting between houses, walking across driveways and crossing the small roads. First seen in the yard of 19 Driftway, then crossed to 20 Driftway where it walked around the house under construction and disappeared behind a dirt mound. Valerie and I jetted over the the next street north to make sure it didn’t slip out, but thankfully if reappeared in the yard of no. 20. Then it strolled down Gillson Rd., cutting across the lawns and driveways of 145 and 149, before crossing the road and then cutting through the manicured hedge of no. 136. The homeowner noticed the bird and heard it was rare and invited folks into his yard to see it, but at that moment it dropped into a sheltered alley/ditch between 136 and 138. It seemed to want to get through the fence to 138, and spent a while pacing back and forth, sticking its neck through the fence, and doubling back. After a few others had good looks from the yard of 136, MJI went to check it out and got a minute-long video as the bird paced, climbed up and adjacent wall, went back down, back up, jump-flapped to the fence, paused, and then flew across the yard of 136 and over the fence in to a wooded thicket along a small stream. Despite 30 min of searching, and at least an hour by others, it was not seen again. A long-anticipated vagrant to Massachusetts with recent surges in both the population and breeding range (and resultant vagrancy), but still amazing to encounter it in coastal Mass and almost in December no less.
