Podrobnosti k pozorování
On November 6, a report surfaced of a hummingbird visiting a feeder in Lindsay. As any late fall/winter hummingbird should be carefully studied to eliminate a vagrant species, the next morning, Alex and I were invited to follow up on the sighting to obtain better documentation and assist in the identification. After careful observation, review of the field marks listed below, and shared input from others, we are confident that this is a very late Ruby-throated Hummingbird vs. a vagrant species. Tail length in relation to wing length; forked tail projects past folded wing. Primaries shape; p10 pointed and longer than p9. Throat; whitish feathers with sooty centers with the exception in the lower throat that has a solid dark band of iridescent feathers, appearing bright yellowish-orange/red in the right lighting conditions. Breast and flanks; whitish overall with slight rufous tinge below the iridescent band. Talking with the homeowners, they first noticed it on the evening of November 3. It was present at their feeders for the following two days, not present on November 6, but back on November 7. On the morning of November 8, it was found deceased and subsequently collected. Many thanks to the homeowners for reporting and welcoming us to document this outstanding record.
