Podrobnosti k pozorování
Very Rare. Confirmation by NYSARC would make this a first NYS record. Previous Northeastern records from Massachusetts, and Rhode Island (2020). Bird actively hunting for caterpillars in farm field east of Roanoke Avenue and west of the private Vineyards Golf Course. Long-tailed species with pointed wings, suggesting a small Falcon or Accipiter (see flight photo) Heavily barred below, including upper-breast and throat. Bill was mostly yellow with a dark tip, showing a slight hook on the upper mandible. The eye was dark with yellow/orange eye-ring. The bird revealed a prominent white patch on nape in flight (see photo) suggesting an immature bird (Jonsson, Birds of Europe, 1993). The back showed brown feathering with white edges. We have no experience with Oriental Cuckoo , but given its more restricted range (eastern Europe) than Common Cuckoo (Northern and Southern Europe), and Common Cuckoo's history of vagrancy in Northeast, in addition to plumage features, we would support a Common Cuckoo id. Thank you's to all the individuals who took the time to get this information out to the birding community.
