Distinguished from semipalm by wingtip length and breast streaking, from Western by body shape, bill and habits, from white-rumped because we saw if fly briefly and lacked white rump. We also recorded the birds call , which when we listened to my friend's reference on his phone matched perfectly. Merlin did not recognize it even when we played our clear recording directly into the app. The bird did not shy from entering the water like least sands usually do and waded up to belly deep, but not higher.
