Podrobnosti k pozorování
*rare to uncommon, but not unexpected. Two birds seen and heard at the far south end of the East Pond. A group of 13 dowitchers landed briefly amongst a roosting flock of LAGUs and mixed shorebirds. All the dowitchers were adults and two caught my eye through bins because they were more thoroughly orange along their flanks and bellies, nearly to their vents. I first considered hendersoni SBDOs, but upon scope views, their bills appeared noticeably longer. This isn't always a key field mark, I know, but in this instance, the differences in bill length was noticeable. Unfortunately, the flock took off after only 30 seconds of observation, but I clearly noted first the typical LBDO call notes (a short series of sharp “kik kik kik” notes), followed by the remainder of the flock giving typical SBDO call notes (a muted series of “tu tu tu” notes). I snapped a few photos of the flock in flight and managed to grab a few shots with what I believe is one LBDO in flight. My identification is most convincingly made by clear differences heard in their vocalizations.
