Podrobnosti k pozorování
Relieved to pass by the cacophony of NOMOs by the big bushes and the trailer. They were loud, flying about, and seemed territorial. As I moved further into the desert, the harsh, grating noise of the NOMOs declined and I could faintly hear a beautiful, unfamiliar song. It took me awhile to locate the bird as it was windy, and the individual sang only periodically, and was moving around. Eventually I saw a brown sparrow flying into the bush and out of sight. First time witnessing the "skylarking" behavior. Observed the individual doing this twice. According to the bird guide, "skylarking" is when territorial males during breeding season give a distinctive flight display while singing. Wow! Pretty awesome. Graceful, elegant. I'll take the territorial behavior of a CASP over a NOMO any day! After the second time of skylarking, it perched on a bush for a few seconds. I knew it was not going to stay there long, so I tried to absorb as much of the bird as I could. Brown sparrow with a peaked head and a long tail. I didn't notice any sort of streaks on the chest/flanks and it seemed rather plain to me. My eyes were drawn to the cheeks which were a darker brown than the brown of the chest/flanks. No cell phone/camera and using sound equipment that I wasn't familiar with. Poor sound recordings attached.
