Podrobnosti k pozorování
Adult drake first seen by Sarah Harris as viewed from 19.8414209, 99.9309490, among Ferruginous Duck in roughly the area 19.8382653, 99.9284454. Seen through a Swarovski ATS scope but also with other optics. Athya duck with overall chestnut brownish colour, but with dark green glossed head with striking pale eye. Undertail coverts brilliant white. The flanks had extensive white although brownish at the top. Distinctive white spot on the wings when closed. After a period of cleaning itself the bird flapped its wings; sharp contrast between the chestnut neck and the white breast and flanks. Underwing completely white, and on upperwing striking white wing bar extending all the way to the end of the primaries. Compared to the Ferruginous Duck the birds head was extremely striking, with the greenish and darker tones being obvious both in the dull overcast light when first picked up, as well as the brighter sunshine seen later. The white flanks were also obvious, but as the bird became more active it would sit lower in the water and these were not always visible. From our observations in the field, we were satisfied that the bird was a Baer’s Pochard, with no hybridisation involved.
