Podrobnosti k pozorování
Spotted by Richie Swanson, President of the Winona Bird Club, as part of the Christmas Bird Count. The snipe was in a rivulet running through a hollow next to the highway, downhill from Castlerock Sourdough. Two stripes on upper flanks, pattern on lower flanks, long beak, different from a woodcock. The snipe was motionless while four of us watched it for a good while. (Photo for documentation by Mara N.) eBird Reviewer: If you are able to discern the difference from the attached photo, we would appreciate any feedback on whether this is indeed a Wilson's Snipe or if it is actually a Common Snipe. It sounds like the Wilson's Snipe is the North American species, but the Christmas Bird Count sheet only lists the Common Snipe. We are consulting people locally, as well. [Richie writes, "To be clear, the species we're trying to confirm is Gallinago delicata (Wilson's), not Gallinago gallinago (common). Please, let me know if e-bird responds. I'll note the response on the final count sheet."]
