Podrobnosti k pozorování
A tad early, but not much… others around southern Ontario this week. About a week earlier than I normally see one in Bruce, but that makes sense given this location is a few hundred km further south. 1 day earlier than my past early record of April 21. I had paused beside a ravine in Coppens Tract when I stopped to look through a large group of kinglets and creepers. I then heard a familiar call note (a sharp, rising “tisst”, lighter than that of a YRWA but much sharper than nearby kinglets) and spotted a small black and white songbird at the base of a Hemlock Tree. Unique songbird both in plumage and behaviour, it crept downwards on the tree in a similar fashion to that of a nuthatch. Upon raising my binoculars I saw it was an adult male BAWW… with strong dark auriculars, splotchy black throat and black streaks along the side of a white breast. Undertail coverts white with a bit of black streaking. Flight feathers black, with two strong white wingbars shown in flight. Black tail with white at the ends of the two outer rects. Grey bill. I also took a video, included in the checklist.
