Birds of the day! Despite their non-native status, RNPH's are visually stunning and always a treat to encounter! The exact origins of these two individuals are a mystery considering Ring-necked Pheasant populations are not known to be self-sustaining throughout most of Northeastern Pennsylvania with exceptions confined to locations where they are heavily stocked during the fall hunting season (i.e. Delaware Water Gap NRA). Even in these areas they remain infrequent; the majority of those that outlast hunting season often fall victim to vehicle strikes, predation, or in some cases, starvation. Due to these factors, the individuals encountered here today are believed to have been game releases from a local sportsman club. The exact date, time, and location of their potential release remains unknown.
