Podrobnosti k pozorování
When I arrived, Ballard had already located the continuing plover on beach, roughly opposite the east end of Chase Palm Park. While under observation, the plover was foraging along the tide line moving back-and-forth with the tide picking at the surface for items that were too small for me to see. This bird remained for the entirety of our visit despite making a short flight up the beach when flushed by a walker. Although this bird was generally quiet, it called two or three times before it took flight, each time giving a clear "chu-weet!" This was a medium-sized plover that appeared similar in structure to the Black-bellied Plovers, yet maybe 10-15% smaller. The short, wedge-shaped bill tapered from a base of medium depth to a pointed tip along a seemingly straight culmen. I further noted that this bird's bill was smaller overall than those of the Black-bellied Plovers seen in direct comparison, and also that the bill would have extended backward on the face to a point near the rear edge of the auriculars if reversed on the face. The forehead was relatively steep, the crown was gently rounded, and the junctions of the crown with the forehead and nape were more strongly rounded, all on a head that was was large for the bird's size. The neck was relatively short and slim, and the body was plump, full-chested, and with a posture that was midway between horizontal and diagonal. The wings were relatively long and tapering to narrowly pointed tips that extended a short distance beyond the tip of the tail. I was able to see the tips of at least four primaries, but I did not clearly see any terrials. I was less sure if the tertials were short, growing, or missing altogether, yet my impression was that the primary projection appeared longer than it should. The tail was short, but it was difficult to see the shape, given that it was largely obscured by the closed wings. The legs were slim and at least moderately long. The overall shape was plumper and neither as long-winged nor as horizontal as I usually associate with American Golden-Plover, and the bill appeared a bit larger, though not as larger as that of the Black-bellied Plovers. This bird's plumage patterns were generally similar to those of the Black-bellied Plovers, but close inspection revealed more the colorful crown and back. The forehead was distinctly pale when seen from the front, but the crown, from its junction with the forehead back to the nape and down to the upper edge of the supercilium, was black with golden streaks that were sharply demarcated but also relatively slim. Demarcating the dark cap was a creamy-whitish supercilium that began just before the eye and then arched over the eye before continuing back over the auriculars before tapering to a point over their rear terminus. Below the supercilium, the auriculars, lores, and the lower part of the face were a dingy, grayish in color, but also with a dusky spot in the lower, rear part of the auriculars that was rounded and a bit diffuse in character. The back and sides of the neck were dusky grayish with an inconspicuously mottled appearance. The underparts were a dull, light-grayish in color, and with a clouded appearance, but without obvious mottling or other markings. Unlike the grayish neck, the mantle and scapulars feathers had blackish centers thast contrasted sharply with golden edges that extended along both the inner and outer edge of each feather, but also with the black extending from the center narrowly to the tip to produce a oddly mottled pattern. Contrasting with the more colorful and boldly marked scapulars, the wings coverts were sandy-brown with paler markings and a washed-out appearance, but I found it difficult to characterize the pattern. As noted above, I was unclear if this bird had any tertials, and as such, the dull blackish primaries were fully visible.
