Podrobnosti k pozorování
Half thrilled and half devastated that I did not have a camera with me. Stepped out at lunch to do a Golden Eagle watch. Completely unexpected and seems to be a county record. I suppose the NE wind direction helped push the bird inland. I see records around this time from Round Valley and Spruce run a while back. As I was watching the eagle sp (listed above) drifting by I caught a glimpse of a swallow circling at near eye-level over Branta Pond. I assumed at first glance that it would be a late Tree Swallow. The bird turned at the perfect angle showing a light orange throat, forehead, and rump. The colors of all three matched each other and helped eliminate Cliff Swallow. The view was exceptional enough that I immediately recognized it as a Cave Swallow. I sprinted inside to grab my phone which was charging and got a few terrible digibinned photos and videos that at least show it is a swallow and show the stubby, square tailed shape. The compact body and tail shape helped eliminate Tree, Barn, or any other "late" swallow. All details of throat, forehead, and rump seen that were needed to id as Cave Swallow. The timing is certainly right for Cave Swallow in the general Northeast area, but I just never expected one at LSP (only in my dreams). The bird circled over the building a handful of times and then gained altitude and headed south into the sun.
