Podrobnosti k pozorování
From their home, Melissa Sanchez and her husband Joselo are watching these birds building new nests in the remnants of the old colony that hangs over the public road. Melissa has borrowed 'Don Jorge''s binoculars and is doing a great Citizen Science job! The oropendolas are nesting in a canyafistula/Cassia tree across the road from their house. Melissa, who has a good view from her kitchen window, said that there is one bird that is much bigger than the rest, and yes, she is right. It perches very close to the largest nest, which also happens to be the highest one and a bit apart from the other ones. Whenever the female leaves the nest for more material, the big bird leaves with her - and usually a third one follows them. They return at the same time, and the large bird stays in that same spot. The birds are eating lots of cecropria 'catkin' fruits/seeds and are mostly using vines for building the nests.
