Podrobnosti k pozorování
One large flock that appeared purely Crested of about 60 birds. A smaller flock of 14 flew in close and allowed for identifiable photos and very good views through the scope. Small round alcids overall quite dark. Some birds showed slightly paler underparts, but this coloration made a smooth transition into the dark breast and upperparts, not showing the sharp contrast that was observed in the Parakeet Auklets. This leads me to believe the flock had a mix of birds entering winter plumage and some birds that remained relatively bright (this is supported by the fact that many birds were missing primaries, suggesting thy were entering molt). Large orange bills with the bill plate continuing into the lores (i.e. differently shaped bills than what I would expect for Parakeet Auklet). The birds in winter plumage showed smaller, duskier bills (i.e. no bill plates). White iris contrasted sharply with otherwise dark head. The thin white line running behind the eye was visible on a few individuals. The namesake "crest" is visible on the rear bird in one of the photos. The lack of a highly contrasting whitish belly on any of the individuals, and the obvious large orange bill plates seems to rule out Whiskered (which would likely be more unusual).
