Podrobnosti k pozorování
An amazing number of this species for Baton Rouge! Loose flocks were moving south over and along the Mississippi River throughout the day, but flock size increased noticeably in the late afternoon and early evening (3:30-6 PM), including a single group of 65 (!) birds. Although we did have a few birds that came in from overland (coming from the E or NE), the vast majority of birds were using the river as a corridor, with numerous groups first appearing rather high up on the far east shore of the river (perhaps they prefer to fly over the I-10 bridge along the E bank). In the early afternoon, a number of flocks were very high and difficult to detect in the mostly clear sky. Late in the day, a large flock was settling on the water downstream from our location. Although there was a mix of adult and first-cycle birds, most were adults (>80%). A sample of some of the larger flocks: 10 at 8:48, 13 at 9:15, 7 at 9:27, 7 at 9:42, 12 at 10:12, 13 at 12:08, 21 at 15:37, 22 at 15:53, 27 at 16:42, 37 at 17:00, 65 (!) at 17:29, 24 at 17:48, and the final 7 at 18:43 (this last group came over land from the NE).
