Podrobnosti k pozorování
Found by Debbie House in T29-2, which had a sizable freshwater pond running the length of the lower edge. When we received Debbie's cell phone call, we were wrapping up our areas for the Owens Lake Big Day - we had T29's, T28 and T26. We rushed to Debbie's location when she conveyed to us she had an "interesting" phalarope. When we arrived, we were shown the phalarope, swimming by itself 200 meters away, in a small puddle on the far side of the main pond. We studied the phalarope, but shortly changed focus to a plover which also looked "interesting".... following much photographing and book review, the plover appears to have only been a snowy. The phalarope, meanwhile, stayed basically in the same area, spinning in shallow water and also walking around on barren playa. At 200 meters, the bill shape stood out very well in profile: stout and thick throughout its length, and seemingly shorter than Wilson's. Comparing Red and Red-necked, we tend to think of Red-necked Phalarope as having a needle thin bill - this bird was much thicker than needle-thin. We conciously checked the back pattern, knowing braces are a good mark for Red-necked - this bird had some patterning, but we feel it was due to a transitional molt, as opposed to braces shown on Red-necked. The bird seemed to be in transition between adult breeding and adult winter plumage - the belly showed hints of blush, most colorful in the undertail coverts. None of the photos showed this well (washed out by the bright playa). The obvious black mark behind the eye rules out Wilson's. This was Rosie and Chris's first Red Phalarope in Inyo since 10 Oct 1998 at Cottonwood Marsh. We got photographs with a Sony megazoom.
