A Black-faced Woodswallow perching on wire. The Black-faced Woodswallow (Artamus cinereus) is the most widespread species of Woodswallow in Australia. It occurs across most of the continent except for its eastern edge. These elegant birds are not related to true swallows, and are in the family Artamidae that includes Butcherbirds, Currawongs and Australian Magpies. It is common in arid, semi-arid and temperate habitats and is mainly insectivorous, hawking acrobatically to catch insects on the wing. This adult was perching on a wire powerline support on Hutt Lagoon, near Port Gregory in Western Australia. Elevation: 9 m. Date added to IBC: September 11, 2018.
