CJ-Can he tell us where we're going and why it's a good place to find seahorses? (translator) L-We're going to Alumar, we're going to Alumar b/c we've seen lots of seahorses there. CJ-And Alumar is part of the Dunhar Reef? L-Just near here. CJ-How long have you been diving for seahorses? (translator) L-25 yrs. CJ-And why is it best to go late at night? (trans) L-Actually it depends on the tide and the weather also, so that the reason why. If the tide is going high, a flood, then that's the best also. 11:02 Ambi, rowing out. 19:34 FX-Boat motor 25:16 Ambi, in the water, water sounds. 25:38 FX-Splash 34:27 CJ-Here we are anchored about ten ft. over the Dunihon Reef with about two fishermen, lantern fishermen, lantern fishers, it's about 12:30 at night, the best time to be looking for seahorses, apparently, with the tide being what it is and it's good luck after midnight anyway, it's pretty dark down underneath that water, even darker than it is in the sky, but with a good torch, with a good flashlight, you can see lot of coral under there and hopefully within the next few hours you can see at least a handful of seahorses, although it's not easy, these guys have been doing it all their lives, and a seahorse is maybe about 5 inches so here we go. 35:22 Ambi, getting ready to go into water, Chris huffing, water splash. 37:52 CJ-What the fishers are doing is holding their breath and swimming under water, pulling a rope attached to the bow of a boat, dragging the boat behind them as they look for seahorses. Instead of regular fins they've got pieces of ply-wood strapped to their feet, and they've got swim goggles. Underneath we've got starfish, brain coral, quite a few sea urchins, keep your distance from those. Let's go see if they've found anything. 40:31 CJ-The lanterns work pretty well considering we're out in the middle of the night. It casts sort of a pale moon-glow that serves a purpose for these guys who need to see. 40:57 FX-Splash, getting out of water? 41:15 CJ-What do you see down there? ?-There's a seahorse. CJ-There's a seahorse there? L-Ya, I thought ?? already told you. CJ-Go tell Marty. 42:03 H-There's a seahorse attached to a string. CJ-A string. H-Ya, a string. There's a seaweed plantation under, they're holding onto the string of the plantation. CJ-And it doesn't move when ppl come close? H-Ya b/c seahorses have close home ranges so they don't really go that fast. The unique characteristics of the seahorses they have a very hold fast. CJ-They hold fast to something? ?-They are faithful to their hold fast. CJ-Oh, they are faithful to their home. H-Ya, and I will check, is it a male or a female. CJ-Can you check? H-Ya. 43:36 FX-Splash, then conversation on going to check the gender. CJ-Digoi the fisher is diving down to pick it up, he's got it in hi... (Notes truncated)
