***Probable Tufted Duck. Female-type with male Greater Scaup across the river. We didn't have a scope with us and the birds were very distant. I took documentary photos since I don't see Greater Scaup too often in the area. Examination of photos on the back of my camera in the field was unhelpful for ID of the female-type bird since they were very poor and we assumed that both were scaup. When I finally looked carefully at the uploaded photos, I noticed that the female-type bird shows what seems to be a small tuft at the back of the head. I understand that conclusive ID from these photos may not be possible, but I'd appreciate any feedback about this bird. A female-type Tufted Duck was found one week later by John Keeley at Martins Brook Pond in North Reading. That bird was alone when it was first discovered but was eventually joined by a male Greater Scaup. I later found what was presumably the same Tufted Duck in the company of a male Greater Scaup with a flock of Ring-necked Ducks on Haggetts Pond in Andover.
