Observation details
Continuing. Found by Geoff Malosh. Large empid superficially similar to Willow but noted the following details in addition to its call: prominent eye ring, long primary projection and dark wings with conspicuously contrasting tertial edges (see photo 1), strongly contrasting face and throat (see photo 2). Seen foraging low in brushy, dense vegetation near the only pond still containing water and a large marsh area, along the hillside parallel to the entrance trail that connects to the boardwalk. While a recording would be ideal, the bird vocalized its loud “pip” call twice during my observation, once when I was initially searching for it, alerting me to its location, and once when I was digibinning it. Only the second Alder I’ve ever seen in Allegheny Co.
